In the State of Virginia can a coffee shop owner legally make their employees split tips with them?

I work at a coffee shop in Virginia and recently the owner of the shop changed the policy on tips and is now making all of us Baristas split our tips with her. We make over minimum wage but not by much. Are they legally allowed to do this?

They are not allowed to do this because tips are for the person performing the service. There was a law passed in 2008 by the state that prohibits this. It was called the Tip Sharing Prohibition Act and was sponsored by Lawrence Cabrini from Richmond. The coffee shop owner could be fined $10,000 for violating this law. Call the police because they are thoroughly familiar with this law.

No, that is not permitted in Virginia.
