What are some good inexpensive jewelry stores around the Chicago suburbs to buy an engagement ring?
We have been looking at rings and don’t want to get taken by over priced jewelers in the mall.

The mall is the worst place to find a good deal on a diamond engagement ring. A huge percentage of their sales goes to pay the extremely high rent. They only carry medium and lower quality diamonds, other jewelers pick the nicer stones. A family owned local store is a good bet. You can also do your research online. I like Blue Nile. Click on diamond jewelry/ engagement ring. Then use the price to find out what ring will fit into your budget. Use the sliders to find a diamond in the size, clarity, and color you want. Good luck and congratulations.

I got mine from Helzberg diamonds and I am very happy with it. Keep in mind that the price has a lot to do not only with the size of the stone but also the clarity etc. You can try a pawn shop for really cheap prices but then it does not come with any guarantees. If you have a particular size and shape in mind, visit few stores and compare prices. You can also buy them online (you design the ring yourself) and http://www.bluenile.com

I got mine at the Jewelry Exchange in Villa Park, It was great because I got to choose the setting and then they placed the diamond I wanted in the setting. The price was great too, and the service was outstanding. Also they will take the ring back if you don’t like it or exchange it without hassle.

head to Jeweler’s row in the Loop it a coupld of blocks on Wabash right behind marshall fields and south for a block or two where wholesale jewelers are. You can definitely negotiate prices and if you find a ring style your fiance likes bring in a picture of it and have it made. My husband took in a picture of a Tiffany’s set i feel in love with and had it made their for half of what Tiffany’s wanted. The place he went to was in the Jeweler’s row mall at 15 S. Wabash.

Jeweler’s Row in Chicago is actually at Five S. Wabash.
Not 15 as indicated above.
They call is ‘row’ but it actually runs vertically… not horizontally as a mall would. It’s just a building with lots of jeweler’s in it.
You still have to do comparison shopping with them. You can play ‘let’s make a deal’ with some owners….but remember….they have to pay their rent, too.

This is not a joke! Go to the Pawn Shop by the corner of Wrightwood and Clark in Lincoln Park. It is right next to the Weiner Circle.
In September of 2005 my fiance said I had one day to shop for a ring-he hates shopping-and so we went to 3 places. A boutique store on Clark and I saw pretty rings that were expensive, the pawn shop, and Steve Quick. Do you know I chose a half carat diamond ring set in PLATINUM for $800.00 at the pawn shop. The setting alone is worth over $800.00! Ask for the patient and kind Elaine at the pawn shop-she will help you. Tell her Shari and Richard from Germany sent you.
