What happens if I receive a package that is too large for the post office box I rent?

I am thinking of renting a post office box, but sometimes I order packages that are pretty large. I think some are too large for the biggest available rental box at my post office. What will happen in that case? Will the post office hold the box for me and tell me? Or do they automatically return packages that are too large for the rental box?
